"Birth of the Cool" is an album that collects the twelve sides recorded by the Miles Davis nonet (featuring Gerry Mulligan, Lee Konitz and others) for Capitol Records in 1949 and 1950. The music is considered seminal. This blog is dedicated to that spirit -- keeping things "cool" by blog birthing. If you've got somethin' cool to share, blow on.

Your interpretation?
Check out this photo that I ran across a while back. I have been looking at it off and on since then and each time I get a different take on it. There is something about it that is powerful and a bit mystical. Your thoughts?
Hey man, I see why you find it fascinating. And there does seem to be some deeper truth being expressed. But ultimately, I'd say it's a deception. Women in the West may be blind to some aspects of how that has its drawbacks compared to some aspects of women in a culture where they might choose or be forced to hide themselves in many ways from the public arena (or while in it) and find that protective in some ways. But the freedoms women have gained in the West are real, especially as you know legally, even compared to when we were kids. Whereas women in at least the Muslim East are often legally still infantilized making them totally dependent on men, and laws made by them, preventing women from evolving politically, socially, economically, etc. It's still a beautiful shot though, and yes, myserious. (And obviously it can be interpreted in many ways, including the idea that women in some parts of the Muslim East can be seen more truly by being forced to focus on their eyes, where women in the West with all their freedom may never be known in as deep a way because of the distractions of everything else about them other than the windows to their souls!)
Imagine for a moment that your daughter and wife had to wear the burka. If they did not wear it they would be killed or maimed. Now imagine that that sick form of human control was brought to America. Thank God, we have the 2nd Amendment. That will never come to America as long as we can resist. Others may be sheep. We are not!!!
I can see the points you and Jim are making and I certainly could agree with them 100%. However, the take I had on it is that Muslim women are in the position that you describe but they have their eyes open and recognize the oppression and are much wiser than given credit for; but the burka they are required to wear, covers them and represents their "chains." Whereas, western women think they are totally free,(no burkas for them) when actually they are blind to what is really going on in a materialistic corporate state.

Tom,
Your interpretation is much more concise and on target brother. Thanks.
