"Birth of the Cool" is an album that collects the twelve sides recorded by the Miles Davis nonet (featuring Gerry Mulligan, Lee Konitz and others) for Capitol Records in 1949 and 1950. Okay, it's made for the military, but it sure is amazing. Being the gadget-man that I am, I certainly could have loads of fun with one of these.
