A good grounding for 2011

A couple of days ago I read an article revealing that the President’s arduous task for this year is convincing the people that raising taxes is the only way to reduce the frightening deficit without having to slash the governmental functions and programs that make this a civilized and arguably fair-minded society.  That is going to be a tall order but here is a good grounding that we should all pass on to our friends and even our foes.

We have examples of what works in times of US economic distress. The post WWI recession/depression was dealt with by Harding/Coolidge by cutting the cost of government by 50% and by cutting taxes. The Roaring Twenties ensued. The 1929 recession/depression was dealt with by Hoover/FDR with heavy government regulation and restrictions on free enterprize, tariffs and higher taxes. A Depression ensued that was only releaved by WWII. Obama and the Democrats have increased government regulation, costs and until recently uncertainly as to income tax rates. Unemployment increased from 7% when Obama was inaugurated to near 10%. A conservative counter balance has been introduced with the possibility of renewed economic expansion and employment. Obama may find that his best friends and allies for reelection may be his new found Republican friends. A move to the right may significately reduce unemployment to the 7% level which will increase his chances of reelection.
